Media Geeks: Stranger Than Fiction
Stranger Than Fiction
Queen Geek     11/21/2006

Harold Crick (Will Ferrell) lives in a world were everything he does is narrated for him. This would seem rather odd to any normal human being, but Harold is not necessarily normal. He is rather a bit on the dull side.Harold is an IRS Auditor that is a math genius and not very socially inclined. One day while brushing his teeth he begins to hear this voice talking about how he is brushing his teeth. It is no ordinary voice, but rather one that sounds like an author writing a book.Details are given including how many times he brushes, in what directions, and what he thinks about while brushing his teeth. This begins to freak out Harold and he begins a search to find answers.

He visits English Professor Jules Hilbert (Dustin Hoffman) at the recommendation of his doctor. Once they meet they try and find out what type of novel or story that Harold is a part of.By eliminating possibilities they come up with the idea that Harold is either in a tragedy or comedy.Harold begins to go about his life and try and figure out which one is more prevalent. He goes to a bakery where he is performing an audit on the owner Ana Pascal (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who did not pay her taxes because she felt like rebelling against the government.Harold begins to fall for her and takes notes based on the ideas of tragedy or comedy. One minute he thinks he is in a comedy, but quickly comes to realize that he is part of a tragedy. With this realization, he returns to the professor and they begin their search for the author.

He discovers that the author is Kay Eiffel (Emma Thompson) who always kills the main characters in his book.Harold meets with her and tries to convince her to change his fate.I will not ruin the rest of the story for you.

This movie is a breath of fresh air for movies this year. Will Ferrell brings a much more dramatic character to life.It is very weird seeing him play a dramatic roll, but he is very impressive. He plays it straight, but things that happen around him will make the audience laugh. I personally feel like this is the best roll that Will Ferrell has every played. Also, the interweaving of the two stories and how they eventually collide together is a very original idea.

This movie is definitely worth the time and will easily keep you entertained.
