I wouldn't normally farm out traffic to another, clearly more popular, gaming site, but after reading Leigh Alexander's piece on the state of creativity in gaming, I feel it necessary to spread the word.

Appropriately titled: Bang Bang, Is Creativity Dead?, the article starts off by asking, then answering, the following:

When future generations of gamers look back on this period of growth and advancement in our medium, will they be able to tell one military shooter, space adventure or dungeon crawler from another? Probably not.

The article makes for a thought provoking read. In essence, she says that creativity often suffers at the hands of its own audience, a Same-ness as she calls it, that ushers in sequels and copy cats instead of fostering unique experiences. The truly innovative titles, as much as in film, music or any other medium, often fall flat commercially and defeat the purpose entirely.

So then, is it the fault of the creators or the consumers? Whether you fit into one or the other, Alexander's commentary might make you rethink your taste in games.
