Media Geeks: Sin City
Sin City
Queen Geek     04/02/2005
With the dull drabs of the Spring movie season upon us it is a breath of fresh air to see a movie like Sin City hit the market. Although the fresh air it provides stinks of blood, crime, women, and even cannibals the movie is definetly one that you will remember.

"Sin City" is infested with criminals, crooked cops and sexy dames, some searching for vengeance and some for redemption. The film incorporates storylines from three of Miller's graphic novels including 'Sin City,' which launched the long-running, critically acclaimed series, as well as 'That Yellow Bastard' and 'The Big Fat Kill.' Where Hartigan, a cop with a bum ticker and a vow to protect stripper Nancy (Jessica Alba).. Mickey Rourke as Marv, the outcast misanthrope on a mission to avenge the death of his one true love, Goldie (Jaime King), and Clive Owen as Dwight, the clandestine love of Shelley (Brittany Murphy), who spends his nights defending Gail (Rosario Dawson) and her Old Towne girls (Devon Aoki and Alexis Bledel) from Jackie Boy (Benicio Del Toro), a dirty cop with a penchant for violence.

The interweaving of these three story lines brings together a great cast and a fast paced story that will keep you in your seat. The violence is rather graphic, but more on the side of comic book violence. The only blood you see appears in black and white, like most of the film. The only other colors you see periodically are red and yellow. This type of film-noire presentation really draws attention more to the stylings of Frank Miller and stays true to his graphic novels. Be prepared though if you are taking children or women with you that this is very graphic to the point where it includes lots of beheadings, dismemberments, cannibals, blood, and female nudity. It is a great movie, but might not be for everyone. Being a woman, I enjoyed the movie, but I had some problems with the raw violence.

As for the directors, I don't think that Miller could've choosen any better. With two masters of the film-noire genre, Robert Rodriquez and Quentin Tarantino, at the helm where could you go wrong? The answer is nowhere. The movie is a hit and a great early start the the action packed summer of films before us.
