Media Geeks: A Game Award Worth Giving
A Game Award Worth Giving
The Star Wars Geek     01/03/2006
Forget G-Phoria and Spike TV's award shows. The rock-star, b-celeb infested stage of those shows aren't honoring games for their accomplishments or the talents of the developers who've created them. Hottest Game Vixen and the Mountain Dew award for Best Racing Sim are not coveted industry trophies. Sadly, no one offers those quite yet.

Helping to get things rolling though, video games will be elligible for a HUGO, the award named for Hugo Gernsback that honors all mediums for special achivements in science fiction. This year will be gamings first foray into Sci-Fi's Oscar night as members named Gaming as a special category to be considered for a permanent place on the ballot.

Games will be scrutinized for their story and design content and the award will be given at the 64th World Science Fiction Convention in Anaheim, CA later this year. Though it lacks a true 'mainstream' awards setting, the HUGOs prove that games as a medium can be taken seriously and those who work hard to create the best games can be awarded for their quality of their work, rather than just how many boobs appear on screen at once.

(not that there's anything wrong with that)
